OLIGHT Oclip Pro Review: Does This Tiny Light Belong in a POTA Bag?

There is one universal rule in amateur radio: the smaller and more important the part is, the farther it rolls when you drop it.

A washer disappears behind the radio. An SMA adapter vanishes into the grass. A tiny screw somehow launches itself across the workbench and into another dimension. That was the problem I kept coming back to while testing the OLIGHT Oclip Pro.

I could have sat at the desk, read every specification off the box, pointed it at a wall, and confirmed that bright things are, in fact, bright. But that would not answer the question I actually had:

Does the Oclip Pro solve enough real problems to earn a permanent place in my POTA bag?

OLIGHT provided the Oclip Pro for me to review, but the observations and conclusions here are my own.

More Than Another Small Flashlight

The Oclip Pro combines three different lighting options in one compact body:

  • A wide floodlight for close-range illumination

  • A focused spotlight for looking into a specific area

  • A red light for reduced-light operating and visibility

The side selector changes the type of light, while the center button controls the power and brightness levels.

Its small size is a big part of the appeal. It can clip onto clothing, a portable-radio bag, a shelf, or another thin surface. The magnetic back also gives you additional mounting options around the shack, vehicle, workbench, or portable operating position.

That versatility is what separates it from a normal handheld flashlight. You are not simply carrying a smaller light. You are carrying something that can be positioned and left in place while you continue working with both hands.

Using the Oclip Pro Around the Station

I started by using the floodlight around my operating position.

At the lower setting, it provided enough light to see the radio controls and nearby equipment without overwhelming the display. Increasing the brightness gave me wider and more complete coverage across the desk.

At the highest output, there was plenty of light—probably more than I would normally need while operating.

That is worth mentioning because the brightest setting is not always the best setting. When you are working around an LCD or computer screen in an otherwise dark space, a powerful light can create glare and make the screen harder to see.

For operating around the radio, I found the lower settings more useful. They provided enough illumination to identify controls and connections without turning the desk into a miniature stadium.

Behind the Radio: Where the Oclip Pro Makes Sense

The front of my ham shack looks fairly organized.

The back of the equipment rack looks like several extension cords, coax cables, and an Ethernet cable decided to form their own government.

This is exactly where a clip-on light becomes more useful than a traditional handheld flashlight.

When tracing a cable, identifying a connector, or making a change behind the station, I need both hands. Holding a flashlight under my chin or balancing my phone against another piece of equipment is never a great solution.

The Oclip Pro allowed me to attach the light near the work area and direct the beam toward the cables and connections. I could then use both hands to trace wiring and inspect connectors.

That may not be the most dramatic flashlight demonstration on the internet, but it is one of the most practical.

Workbench and Gear-Bag Use

Good lighting also matters on the workbench because amateur radio apparently requires every important screw to be slightly smaller than your ability to see it.

The Oclip Pro worked well as an additional light source for inspecting small parts, connections, and equipment. It was also useful for looking through storage bins and gear bags.

For detailed soldering or component work, I would still prefer a dedicated bench lamp or a magnifying light. The Oclip Pro is not going to replace a purpose-built work light.

But that does not mean it has no value on the bench.

It can provide light from another angle, illuminate a tight space, or help when you are working somewhere away from the main bench.

The same applies in the field. When you are digging through a POTA box looking for a choke, adapter, connector, or patch cable, the ability to clip a light to the bag can be much more useful than trying to hold a flashlight while searching.

The Ham Radio Test: Does It Create RFI?

Before putting any rechargeable electronic device beside a radio, I want to know whether it generates interference.

Small electronic devices can sometimes create noise through switching circuits, voltage regulation, or USB charging. That does not mean they all do, but it is worth checking.

I listened to the receiver with the Oclip Pro turned off and then repeated the test while cycling through the different lighting modes and brightness levels. I also moved the light around the radio to see whether proximity changed anything.

In my shack configuration, I could not identify any meaningful increase in receiver noise while using the Oclip Pro.

That does not guarantee the same result with every radio, frequency, antenna system, USB power supply, or station layout. It simply means the light passed the test with the equipment and configuration I used.

For ham-radio equipment, that is an important result. A light can be convenient, compact, and bright, but if it raises the noise floor every time you turn it on, it is not going to remain near the station for long.

What I Liked

The strongest feature of the Oclip Pro is its versatility.

It provides:

  • General station lighting

  • A focused inspection beam

  • Red illumination

  • Magnetic mounting

  • Hands-free operation

  • A compact form that travels easily with a radio bag

It is not going to replace a dedicated bench lamp.

It is not going to replace every full-size flashlight I own.

It is not going to perform every lighting job better than a purpose-built light.

But it can handle several useful jobs from one small package, and that matters when space in a portable kit is limited.

What Could Be Better

The internal battery cannot be swapped in the field. That is understandable given the size of the light, but it means charging becomes part of your preparation.

The controls also took some practice. Once I understood the flow between the selector and button, they worked well, but there was a short learning curve.

My biggest nitpick was the orientation of the clip.

In some mounting positions, particularly when attaching it to a hat or certain pieces of gear, I felt the clip direction could have been reversed so the light would naturally face the area I wanted to illuminate.

That did not make the clip unusable, but it did limit a few positioning options.

As mentioned earlier, the brighter settings can also create glare on radio displays and computer screens when used in complete darkness. That is easy enough to manage by lowering the brightness or repositioning the light.

Does It Belong in My POTA Bag?

Yes.

But I probably would not leave it sitting loose on the operating desk. If a small tool gets buried in a drawer, it is rarely available when you actually need it.

For me, the best place for the Oclip Pro is attached directly to one of my portable go kits.

That keeps it visible, accessible, and ready for late-day activations, beach operations, equipment checks, and teardown after the light starts disappearing.

It also travels wherever the bag goes.

That is ultimately why it earned a place in my POTA setup. It is small enough not to become a burden, but useful enough to solve several real problems around a portable station.

It can help illuminate controls, find a connector, inspect a cable, search through a gear bag, mark a location, or provide red light when full white illumination is unnecessary.

For me, that makes the OLIGHT Oclip Pro more than another small flashlight.

It makes it a practical piece of field gear.

Final Verdict

The OLIGHT Oclip Pro is best suited for operators who want one compact light that can handle several jobs around the shack and in the field.

It will not replace every dedicated lighting tool, but it does not need to.

Its value comes from the combination of floodlight, spotlight, red light, clip mounting, magnetic mounting, and hands-free use in one small device.

For my station, it earned a permanent place clipped to my portable radio bag.
